Artist’s statement: My art is shards of being, sullied from the dirt it’s pulled out of. It explores imprintedness in paper and clay and in bodies and minds. I live with trauma and experience the world through multiple consciousnesses. This experience makes me question ideas of individuality and discreteness embedded in our colonial and capitalist culture. Healing for me is being part of networks of consciousness including other people and non human animals and plants in the ecosystem. It involves speaking and drawing from the anti-patriarchal truths I carry. The images I make in clay and lino prints explore this tactile boundary between the self and outside the self where they change each other. Where are the doorways between one consciousness and the next? Between one part of nature (me) and the next (that tree). Some of it is the joy of existence as part of nature. Part of my practice is engaging with the truth of a colonized and degraded land. In 2023 I researched native plants and designed a thirty foot native plant pollinator garden at Goldenrod Community Garden, Ottawa. I am now designing ceramic bowls for the pollinators to drink from. I am inspired by the textures of the ecosystem. I see native plant gardening and habitat restoration and learning the names of the plants around me as one arm of my art practice as well as a way to mitigate some of the harms of colonialism on this land. I am interested in wildness and places in-between.
