Christos Pantieras explores themes of communication, relationships, intimacy, and identity. He is engaged with the digital word and the weight it carries beyond virtual space. Text is largely a material for Pantieras. He sources it from online correspondence, such as email, text messages, and messaging from gay hook-up apps, which he then manipulates through analog processes. His sculptures and installations become a physical record of a human presence, they archive the dissolution of affection, while investigating the resonance of a lost connection.
Christos Pantieras (born, 1973 in Ottawa) completed his Masters of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture at York University (Toronto, ON) in 2015 for which he earned an Ontario Graduate Scholarship and SSHRC funding. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions including: The Ottawa Art Gallery (Ottawa), The Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (Toronto), Modern Fuel ARC (Kingston), AXENEO7 (Gatineau), Circa-Art Actuel (Montreal), and Artcite Inc (Windsor). Pantieras’ work is represented in the collection of the City of Ottawa and throughout several private collectors. He has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the City of Ottawa. Pantieras was shortlisted for the Ottawa Arts Council Mid-Career Award in 2019.
