I graduated from the University of Ottawa visual art program in 1983 with a Baccalaureate in Arts Honours Studio. Subsequently I earned a Master of Clinical Science in Communicative Disorders degree from Western University and became a speech therapist helping young children, followed by a stint as manager of a Buddhist conference centre. Since retiring I’ve devoted myself to creating visual art. At first glance my artwork looks abstract but really it isn’t. I think of it as observations of the real world that come into my mind, get tossed around, and come out as art. For example, the attached drawing started life as a cube-shaped sculpture with a doorway-like opening. The drawing shows the cube unfolded from 3D to 2D, so that each cube-face is visible. The lines surrounding the figure were done by making a template to cover the figure and then closing my eyes to draw around the template, in four five-minute sessions. Only recently did I realize that the source of the cube-shape was a stacking toy that my grandson and I played with several years ago when he was a toddler.
