The Main influence for my artistic practice is my work experience as a general contractor and HVAC maintenance technician dating back to 2015. I am concerned with the labour and effort that goes into constructing the spaces we engage with every day that largely goes unnoticed and under considered, what I refer to as invisible labour. My works focus my personal experience and my co-workers highlighting the personal human elements that are often ignored when people think of workers. My Hard Hat series was an exploration of the personal aspects of the tools we use. Hard hats are the most customized piece of equipment workers use, they function as a self-portrait, the stickers and colours someone adds to their hard hats over time say a lot about the workers personality and experience. My Practice focuses on the relationship between figure and background on the 2-dimensional plane, in the greater context of the history of representation, as a strategy to reconfigure and reconsider our relationships to ourselves, each other and our environments. In many ways, my work is a meditation on the painting and the room in which it sits. Closing the gap between what is traditionally considered fine art and the world of construction. my latest works are created using non-traditional painting tools including masonry and drywall tools before painting with traditional oil painting techniques and painterly gestures to mirror this discussion in the materiality of my work.
