Nancy Brandsma

Biography

Nancy is a contemporary oil painter born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1975. She has been actively involved in the Francophone artist community of Ottawa, Ontario since 2009 where she currently resides. Her oil abstracts have been exhibited in solo shows and group exhibits throughout the province in several galleries and venues. As an active member of BRAVO (Bureau des Regroupements des Artistes Visuels de l’Ontario) she has participated in multiple art projects across Ontario including organizing BRAVO-EST’s participation in Ottawa’s first ever Nuit Blanche with the exhibit ‘Frenchkiss(er)’ in 2012. Nancy divides her time between painting at her Ottawa based studio and teaching art to both young and old. She has received professional training at the Ottawa School of Art and is currently represented by Marten Arts Gallery (Bayfield, Ontario, Canada) and Carleton Place Gallery (Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada). She is now a free agent in the Ottawa region (Art+ galerie is permanently closed). Many of her works can still be seen in Ottawa at Play Food & Wine (Byward Market) or by private appointment at Studio Space Ottawa. Her swirling monochromatic texturized work can be found in many private collections and in several published catalogues in Canada.

Artist Statement

I am fascinated by the multitude of stories that surround us. People and objects alike have stories to share and I am particularly interested in the patina and emotion they generate or leave behind.

The moment I dig my fork into the pie of paint, my body and mind is completely engrossed in the process, tuning out everything until the canvas is covered in lively strokes and scratches. I often sit in front of the finished product observing and listening to see if anything else needs to be said in reply. Each painting is done in one day while the mood of the story is still present. To me, texture and colour tonality is key. It’s like a decadent dish that is both pleasing to the eye and to the senses for its taste and aroma. All must work together to excite the senses. Often the most novel marriage of two simple ingredients can result in quite the punch to the senses. I create a rich texture, reminiscent of icing on a cake, with tools that are both traditional and unconventional—simply, oil paint and the very humble fork. I invite the spectator to dig deep and surrender to the rich landscapes of untold stories.
